NEW VINTAGE BAROLO BY ELIO ALTARE
Some of our winemakers need no introduction whatsoever. Their names are simply big enough. This especially rings true for Elio Altare. Featured in the 2015 wine film Somm: Into the Bottle, Altare is introduced as “one of the most influential modern producers of Barolo” by Ian Cauble.
Needless to say, we are more than proud to be working as their importer for the Dutch market. A lot had changed since the first shipment of Elio’s Barolo’s vintage 1998 shipped to our warehouse in Amsterdam. For more than 25 years our companies have worked together, Elio has fought and worked maniacally to get the region of Barolo on the map and we have seen the demand for Barolo surge. The family estate is now run by Silvia Altare, Elio’s daughter, who has yet to fight her own battles with the extremes of our changing climate, the ever increasing vineyard prices and foreign investors trying to get their feet between the door. The wines though, have never been more beautiful than they are now, all the years of intense hard work, experimenting and a clear vision have proved to deliver wines of incomprehensible beauty, elegance and complexity.
Excitingly enough, we have new vintages of Altare coming in. These include juicy and ready-to-drink 2022 Dolcettos, Barberas and Langhe Nebbiolos, as well as the illustrious (single-site) Barolos from 2017 and 2019.
According to Silvia, 2022 proved to be a difficult vintage. Faced with the hottest and driest year since ages, the vines’s resilience and winemaker’s artisanship were truly put to the test. Fortunately enough, the resulting grapes came out remarkably ripe and vital, albeit in smaller quantities.
As for Barolo, the 2019 vintage is meant to be the “perfect compromise between power and elegance”. Silvia Altare named this a classic vintage, with a balmy summer and temperate fall delivering a rich wine without being overly dense. Unfortunately, the yield was not that high this year, which means that there will be limited availability of some of these wines.
