Ve d’Avior

Ve d’Avior is runned by Cati Ribot, 2nd generation winegrower in the town of Santa Margalida, in the northeast of Mallorca. Coming from a family that was into farming, almonds, olives and table grapes, it was her father Jaume, who came up with the idea of making wine, so he planted international varieties (Cabernet sSauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah) in the 1990s. From 2004, Cati was pleased to help her father in the vineyards and cellar, who just built a sizeable bodega next to their vineyards. The wines were characterized as full-bodied red wines that Spain and Mallorca were known for at the time.

With more and more interest in wine, Cati decided to do a course in Barcelona to become a sommelier. In this way, she got familiar with all the wines from over the world and expended her horizon. With all the knowledge she gained, she wanted to do things differently at the estate. Cati got more responsibility at the family bodega and started changing the way of making wine and farming (certified organic since 2012). In 2014 she even started to treat her 13 hectares biodynamically.

Together with her father she got more and more interested in the Mallorquin viticulture and of old varieties that were common to plant in the past. They started to plant new vines of ancient varieties like escursac, the local malvasia de banyalbufar, girò ros and prensal blanc. The grapes tended to be more suitable to the Mallorquin soils and climate, and also important, her own taste. And that’s the story behind the name Ve d’Avior, meaning “from the past” in Mallorquin.

Catí is one of the winemakers of the natural wine movement on Mallorca, using no sulphites and taking little to no interventions. She opened her cellar for other young winemakers to share ideas and giving them an opportunity to explore.

The wines from Ve d’Avior are vibrant and exciting, a selection of fresh wines with little alcohol, and a true expression of the Mallorcan character.
