“My father was inspired by a vision of realising, and bringing to the world’s attention, the enormous viticultural potential of the Castel del Monte area.”

Rivera

Eighty-five hectares of vineyard is quite a lot, but by local standards Rivera is average in scale. The company started out in the late 1940s and was founded by Sebastiano de Corato. In the 1980s his son Carlo continued the Azienda Rivera, later assisted by the next generation: Sebastiano Jr. and Marco.

Most of the vineyards are located in the middle of Puglia and are part of the DOCG Castel del Monte. They are largely planted with native grape varieties such as nero di troia, montpulciano and bombino, that flourish on the sun-drenched slopes of south-eastern Italy. Cool rainy winters and hot dry summers – somewhat tempered by the sea breeze – form an ideal climate.

Rivera now has the latest technology but has always worked with an eye for tradition and attention. Every step from vineyard management to bottling is done with the most up-to-date viticultural and oenological practices and with the deepest respect for natural processes. In doing so, they are focused on continuous improvement in quality.

The Rivera wine cellars still have a historic core that dates back to the late 19th century. A new, temperature-controlled wing was added later in the 1960s. The underground barrel cellars contain more than 400 French barriques and large French and Slovenian oak barrels.
