Max Ferd. Richter is a family business that stretches back centuries, and is full of tradition. Constantin is the tenth generation in the Richter family, with boyish charm and an infectious smile. Obliged to take over the family business as the only child, you’d say, but he never had any doubts about that.

The Mosel is the oldest of the thirteen wine regions in Germany, with the Middle Mosel being the largest region, home to Max Ferd. Richter. Here you will encounter steep hills and slopes on both sides of the river, mainly populated by the Riesling grape variety.

Richter makes wine according to traditional viticulture and they believe that the best wines come from the vineyards, not from the cellar. Constantin manages to achieve this by minimising the use of sulphite and not using insecticides or pesticides in the vineyards. The harvest is done entirely by hand. “Not a nine-to-five job, but in the end, you have to be able to see through all the difficulties this existence entails. I love what I do and be able to continue the family tradition!”

In addition to the well-known riesling grape, there is also a small amount of spätburgunder and weissburgunder. But they are specialised in riesling. “This is exactly what I mean, crisp acidic flavours, harmoniously intertwined with peach and apricot, and a mineral finish.” According to his father, Dirk Richter, when describing a tasty bottle of Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr from 2012.
