Atlas Land

It is quite a surprise to find a proud Italian, born and raised near the famed Piedmont region, in the western Algarve making wine. A child of the mountains, Filippo Pozzi has always been drawn to the ocean. Hence his ending up on the Atlantic coast, where he established his winery ‘Atlas Land’ in 2019.

After a classical education in winemaking at Bordeaux University, Filippo worked for grand wineries in Pauillac, as well as Napa Valley. While learning from the big names, he nevertheless developed his own ideas about winemaking over time. For instance, Filippo values his relationship to the land and the sea, and wants to make wines that reflect the unique qualities of his piece of land.

The small scale of the winery allows Filippo to be present in each of his vineyards on an everyday basis. Each of his wines is therefore the optimal expression of a vineyard, but also each year individually. Filippo is quite the stretchy winemaker, as he dislikes fixed methods. In his house, sharing beautiful moments with friends and family is more important than adhering to strict procedures. Although he has a thing for using stainless steel tanks, old oak barrels and his “damigiane” – large, hand-blown bottles brought over from Italy. These techniques guarantee that Filippo’s wines do not lose a shred of fruitiness in the process.

Filippo works with a wide range of native Portuguese grapes, including Castelão, Boal Branco and Crato Branco. Some of his vines are more than 100 years old. Fortunately, these are in very good hands with our rather spirited Italian, who has dedicated himself to this piece of land like no other.
